Focus on Technology

April 5, 2005 marked our third year of sponsoring Focus on Technology Day.  This project is a partnership between the Career Activities and Employment Center of Southwestern Illinois College and The Tech Prep Consortium of Southwestern Illinois. Focus on Technology was designed to increase the knowledge of nontraditional career options and awareness of college services and programs for female high school students at the same time assisting students in making informed career decisions and transitioning to college.  The long-term goal of this initiative is to increase the number of females enrolled in targeted program areas at Southwestern Illinois College.

Year 1: (November 4, 2002)

Our first year Focus on Technology was funded by Tech Prep and the Perkins III Grant.  Twenty-six participants explored three areas of technology:  drafting, electronics, and welding on the Belleville Campus.   The day began with registration and a presentation by a guest speaker, Gay Cornell, Technical Representative from Lincoln Electric and welder.  She presented on how she broke the mold and found success in a nontraditional career.   The day continued with each participant engaging in one-ninety minute hands-on session of her choice, two-thirty minute informational sessions, lunch and a tour of the college.

Participants who chose drafting for the hands-on session used CAD to design a house.  In Electronics the participants built a robot, and in welding, participants suited up and welded. Each participant received a t-shirt and other promotional items from the instructional programs.  The feedback surveys indicated an interest in more hands-on experiences.

Participants were from the following schools: Collinsville High School
Sparta High School
Mascoutah High School
Granite City High School
Venice High School

NTO Look Project

In 2004, the Illinois Center for Specialized Professional Support of Illinois State University awarded the Nontraditional Program in the Career Activities and Employment Center with $750 as part of the NTO Look project.  The goal of the NTO Look Project is to assist secondary/postsecondary career and technical education partnerships in identifying and strengthening aspects of their nontraditional programs in order to facilitate the achievement of quality, forward-thinking performance outcomes.  The NTO Look Award is a monetary award program for NTO Look Project partnership to support the implementation of research-based program improvement plans for nontraditional learners in career and technical education.

Year 2: (March 31, 2004)

Being a part of the NTO Look Project allowed us to once again offer the Focus on Technology day on the Belleville Campus.  The Career Activities and Employment Center of Southwestern Illinois College and The Tech Prep Consortium of Southwestern Illinois partnered to once again offer this event.  The event consisted of the completion of pre and post tests, feedback surveys, Guest Speaker, Gay Cornell, three hands-on activities in Drafting, Electronics, and Welding, lunch and a tour of the college.

This year each participant experienced, hands-on, all three areas of technology.  In Drafting, participants learned how to read blue prints, experimented with surveying equipment and learned about 3-D objects.  In Electronics, each participant built a robot and in welding each participant had the opportunity to suit up and weld.

Many promotional items were given to the participants.  Follow-up services were also offered from the Career Activities and Employment Center.

Participants were from the following schools: Belleville East High School
Belleville West High School
Mascoutah High School
Triad High School

Year 3:  (April 5, 2005)

Once again being a part of the NTO Look Project and receiving the NTO Look Award for $2,000 we were able to partner and expand the program with more hands-on experiences.  We also moved the day to the Granite City Campus, home to the Industrial Training Center. This year the targeted, nontraditional career areas were:  Auto Collision Repair, Aviation Maintenance, Electronics, Process Operations, and Welding.

Each participant learned about job and labor market information in each technical area as well as how to enroll in the Southwestern Illinois College programs.  Participants were able to explore all five areas of technology hands-on.  Currently enrolled female students in Southwestern Illinois College’s Aviation Maintenance and Electronics Technology programs assisted the participants in the hands-on experiences and were available for questions.  Participants were asked to complete a pre and post test, self-assessment survey, feedback survey and a follow-up questionnaire.  Lunch was once again provided and many promotional items were given to all participants including a t-shirt, notepad and pen along with career resources to assist in the career and job search process.

Participants were from the following schools:    Belleville West High School
Beck Area Vocational Center
Granite City High School
